Wellington alternative school may have to wait for new roof

(WICHITA, Kan.) — The Roosevelt Education Center is need of a new roof now, but may not get one until next year.

"We have one spot on the inside where when it rains, its not terribly uncommon that we have water that comes inside," explains Larry Roth.

The building houses Wellington's alternative school. Years of delaying the project, because of budget issues, has the roof in rough condition.

Putting a new roof on the building would wipe out the districts capital outlay fund. District leaders hope to buy materials with money from this year's budget and pay for labor out of next years budget.

"Our general fund has been cut about a million and a half in the last year or so so we have less to transfer to capital outlay and contingency funds," explains Superintendent Rick Weiss.

So while the roof is at the top of the district's priority list, it could still be months before it gets the fix it needs.
