(WICHITA, Kan.) — An invention by a Wichita State professor has resulted in the first royalty-bearing license for WSU.

Dwight Bueford, the director of the Advanced Joining & Processing Labratory at WSU'S National Institute for Aviation Research, developed a device called an end effector.

It is designed using friction stir welding principals and can be used with robots, machining centers and purpose-built equipment to produce lap joins in a single, automated procedure.

WSU says the development has the potential to benefit any industry with a need to join metal on metal, such as aviation and automotive.
