Dog rescued from ledge on Wichita canal route

March 03, 2011|By Chris Durden | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — A KDOT worker saves a dog who'd spent at least two days on a ledge with traffic going by at 60 miles per hour.

You may have seen it if you were driving along the Canal Route in Wichita, specifically between Harry & Pawnee along I-135 northbound.

People were pulled over wondering what they could do. Then Ted Coleman, a KDOT worker, came along. He says the dog was on the other side of the barrier wall, stuck on a 12 inch ledge.

"I kind of startled him and yanked him of the wall. it was my only alternative, brought him to side of the road, calmed him down, petted him, at first he was kind of feisty," said Coleman.

Coleman says the dog was banged up a little, and may have been hit by a car. The dog will eventually end up at the Wichita Humane Society once he or she gets a clean bill of health.
