WPD officer accused of sex crimes still in custody

(WICHITA, Kan.) — A Wichita police officer accused of two separate sex crimes against citizens remains behind bars, despite posting a $25,000 bond.

According to jail records, 27 year-old patrolman Joseph McGill is being held in the clinic at the Sedgwick County Jail. Sheriff Bob Hinshaw wouldn't comment on the inmate's medical condition.

Inmates who are in need of protection, or deemed to be at risk are sometimes housed in isolation in the clinic until proper housing arrangements can be made, Hinshaw said.

McGill is charged with aggravated sexual battery and sexual battery in connection with a pair of incidents on November 19, 2010 and February 27, 2011.

According to a police report, the November incident happened near 31st Street South & Seneca around 9:30 p.m. A victim told police the officer "acted inappropriate."

Police opened an investigation after that incident and the case was still pending when the second alleged incident occurred last Sunday, Police Chief Norman Williams said.

McGill's bail bondsman told FactFinder 12 Investigators, the officer posted bond Wednesday evening, but remains in jail because authorities are working out the conditions of his release. Those details could include where he can stay, with whom he can stay, and what type of electronic monitoring device officials will use, said Bob Scofield of Affordable Bail Bonds.

McGill, a three year veteran of the Wichita Police Department, is currently on suspension without pay. The married father of four is scheduled to be back in court March 16th.
