The Backstretch Blog: Is Ford the New Chevy?

March 07, 2011|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

As NASCAR heads to the first break of the season, what have we learned? Well for starters we've learned that it's good to be in a Ford Fusion these days. Ford drivers have one two of the first three races this season. But is Ford ready to finally knock Chevy off as top dog in the sport?

Part of the Blue Oval's early success seems to be due to the new engine. It was the rock star at Daytona, far and away the best in the two car draft. But also, no failures for them this season. Impressive when you are talking about a new engine.

"Doug Yates and those guys build great engines. I think that they had been doing a great job with the old engine. Now we have this new engine, we may have a lot to look forward to," said Las Vegas winner Carl Edwards. "I don't want to jinx it or anything, but I'm really excited to run that engine for the whole year."

And exciting time for Fords for sure. Now, reality check time. Look at the points. There are just two Fords (Edwards 3rd and AJ Allmendinger 9th) in the top 12. The bow tie brigade has 7. Of course, there are more Chevy drivers. And if the emphasis is on winning. Then maybe, just maybe this could be Fords year. They are off to a pretty good start.
