The Backstretch Blog: California Dreamin'

March 24, 2011|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

To quote the great poet LL Cool J "we're going back to Cali, Cali, Cali, were going back to Cali, but just once this season."

OK maybe the song didn't go exactly that why, but you get the point. NASCAR races to the beautiful edge of the left coast, Fontana, California and the Auto Club speedway. This is the only date for this track in 2011, and honestly unlike what happened in Atlanta, I think this is the right call. There's no rich history at Auto Club speedway and southern Cal does seem all that interested in having to races. One race seems about right.

California is home to 7 drivers in Sunday's race: Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, AJ Allmendinger, David Gilliland, Robby Gordon and Casey Mears. But really when you go to Cali, it's all about 5-time Jimmie Johnson. The dominator, dominated at his home track, with five victories at the Fontana track and he has won three of the last five races.

It's also a pretty good track for Carl Edwards, who has finihsed in the top 2 in 5 of the last 6 races. You might say he's on a roll right now

This is also important race for those at the other end of the points. After this week, the top 35 will be set with 2011 points, and those will be the teams locked into the race.

This is a race and a track that really has just kind of been there for me. Nothing really stands out good or bad. I'm gonna give it a good honest chance on Sunday, but it disappoints, you might catch me drifting to the NCAA tournament.
