(DERBY, Kan.) — A Derby neighborhood is on alert after a woman was sexually assaulted in her garage, the second such crime in just over a month.

Derby Police said both crimes happened in the Glen Hills subdivision.  The latest occurred Wednesday night around 9:00 p.m.

A woman was in her garage when a man wearing a ski mask and holding a knife threatened and sexually assaulted her, police said.

In late March or early April, a woman was raped in her home not far from the location of Wednesday's assault.

"It is scary, it's our safety," said a woman who asked only to be identified as Cindy.  "This is our neighborhood.  This is Derby."

A dive team from the Derby Fire Department spent much of Thursday searching a pair of murky ponds.  They were looking for any evidence that may have been discarded by the suspect.

"It is simply an attempt to be thorough in our investigation," said Derby police Chief Robert Lee.

Police officers went door to door late last night asking questions of residents and urging them to be vigilant.

"I'm not scared I'm just going to keep my antennas on and keep alert about the neighborhood," said Regina Willhite.  "I think we all need to be coming together, coming outside more, spending more time and getting to know our neighborhood."

Police describe the suspect as a white man, 5'10" to 6' tall, thin to medium build. They say he was wearing a black ski mask, a black nylon jacket, tight black jeans, black high-top tennis shoes and black gloves.

If you have any information about the assault, call Derby Police at 788-1557 or Derby CrimeStoppers at 788-TIPS.
