High winds wreak havoc on Memorial Day plans

(LAKE CHENEY, Kan.) — Winds gusting over 40 miles per hour are making Memorial Day plans more difficult today.

Boaters on Lake Cheney are reconsidering hitting the waves on a day when the heightened wind makes boating conditions more dangerous.

"Yesterday and today the winds have really taken the air out of visitation," says park manager Jody Schawartz.

Park officials said their first concern with the wind was the possible danger faced by campers grilling out.

Rangers went from site to site making sure all fires were contained to the grill area....their focus then shifted to the water.

Officials then added they saw a lot of boats head  home because the water on the lake was just too dangerous.

Waves reportedly got up to three or four feet as the winds pushed in through the afternoon.

"When it's windy like this we do not advise anyone to go out on to the lake…It’s just rough and dangerous”, says Schwartz.

Bad weather also meant bad a bottom line for lakes all across Kansas....something officials said is simply out of their hands.

"We are losing some revenue because people cannot come out today, that's part of working with nature," says Schwartz.
