(WICHITA, Kan.) — 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War.
To help honor the service and sacrifice of the thousands of Kansans who served in the war, restoration work is underway on a memorial at the Maple Grove Cemetary in Wichita. It was supposed to be completed this year, but work fell behind schedule.
The veterans are buried in a circle around the memorial, which is a small pavillion. It was originally built in the 1890's. Restoration work on it began originally ten years ago.
Maple Grove is just south of 13th & Hillside in northeast Wichita.
