(WICHITA, Kan.) — 20 year old Kyle Hicks had a bone marrow transplant today. He has a rare genetic skin disease that covers his body with blisters.
For the past several years, .. he has fought with his insurance company to pay for a surgery that could free him of his condition.
His mother released an update of Kyle's condition Tuesdaysaying, "From start to finish the transplant took 11 minutes. They got a large harvest from the donor. 3 units went to Kyle, 3 units to save, there are still 2 units left. Kyle will be getting the additional 2 units soon. We don't want to waste one of these precious cells. He is sleeping now and everything is going very well."
Now thanks to new research, Hicks' insurance is covering the procedure. His grandmother says the transplant went well. Hicks will be in the hospital for the next four to six weeks
