Landscaping accident hits close to home for other crews

June 10, 2011|By Megan Strader | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Crews working for "Michael's Complete Lawn Care have a big job -  keeping things tidy along Wichita's canal route.

That's means cutting grass and weeds along one of the busiest stretches of road in the city.

"It's highly dangerous. We definitely take every precaution that we can," explains Senior Forman, Aaron Slone.

That includes wearing vests, but most importantly, paying attention to what's happening around them. But that doesn't always guarantee their safety.

"A guy was wearing a backpack blower, and we were trying to stay out of the street as much as possible, and he was clipped by a mirror. It spun him around and threw him into the grass."

That man, fortunately, wasn't seriously hurt.  But that wasn't the case for a 32 year-old landscaping who was killed Friday morning while weed-whacking near Hawker Beechcraft.

According to police, the driver who hit him didn't stop, but rather continued to drive with the man's body on top of the car - more than two miles.

Dispatchers say 911 calls came in from people who saw him driving the man's body on the roof of his minivan.

A bizarre and sad story that's reminding crews like those Michael's Complete Lawn Care to play it safe.

Slone adds, "The safest thing to do is assume drivers are not paying attention - expect the best but prepare for the worst."
