July 11, 2011|By Roger Cornish | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — At Camp Hyde, this week sounds like typical summer fun...how does it feel?

Well, hot....as lifeguard Michelle McNabb tells us, "like we're roasting..that's our joke going around saying we're roasting."

So why not just stay home in the air conditioning? That's what we asked camper Avery Malloy.

Her answer, "Yeah, but you don't really do anything at home, you actually do something here"

Here is Camp Hyde, the YMCA camp in southwest Sedgwick County.

Home this week for about 300 kids and dozens of staff members.

the camp has had to go to its heat contingency plan earlier than normal this year.

Camp director Jon McReynolds says,"In the afternoon on a day like today, we try to encourage a lot of water activities through the swimming pools, the beach behind me here.  Also our buildings are air conditioned so we have kids watching movies and things like that as well."

And drink lots of water.
