'Nuts Calm Captains

Wichita, ks — The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 5-0 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.


In his official return to the Wingnuts, Derek Blacksher pitched eight shutout innings to earn the win.  Blacksher allowed just two hits, and none after the fourth inning.  Blacksher struck out six, walked three, and retired the leadoff hitter in seven of eight frames.  Blacksher threw 111 pitches and never allowed a runner past second base.


The Wingnuts took an early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring twice.  Brent Clevlen reached on an infield single with two outs.  Juan Richardson followed with a line drive, two-run home run over the left field wall.


In the bottom of the fourth, Jose Duran reached first on an infield single with one out.  Mike Conroy tripled to left-center field to score Duran and give the Wingnuts a 3-0 lead.  Two batters later, Richardson collected his third RBI of the game with a two-out, RBI single through the left side.

Josh Workman hit a long, opposite-field home run with one out in the bottom of the fifth to give the Wingnuts a five-run lead.


Twice in the game, Blacksher retired seven or more hitters in a row.


Marcos Tabata finished the game with a scoreless top of the ninth.


Aaron Cunningham started for the Captains and took the loss.  Cunningham allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in six innings.  Cunningham walked one and struck out three.
