(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita police say a 19-year-old woman was shot in the chest...after a gun fell out of her boyfriend's shorts.

Police say the woman and her 18-year-old boyfriend were walking on E. Douglas Monday afternoon when he decided to take off his shorts. As he was pulling down his shorts, his gun fell out of his waistband and discharged when it hit the ground.

Eyewitnesses called 911 after seeing the woman trying to get up, thinking she was suffering a heat-related problem.

At first the boyfriend told police she was shot in a drive-by shooting. He had stashed the gun before police arrived. Later he admitted it was an accident.

She was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but police say her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The 18-year-old was booked into jail for reckless aggravated battery.
