El Dorado Park numbers stay up, despite heat

(EL DORADO, Kan.) — Is it ever too hot to enjoy the great outdoors? Not if you ask David Turner.

"We never worry about the heat."

He and his family decided on Thursday to spend the weekend camping at El Dorado Lake. But if you take a look at the neighboring campsites Friday evening, you'd see not everyone is so worry free. He and his family were the only ones in their section of the park.

Camp Host, Avola Fitzwater, tells Eyewitness News, "It's slow. There's been a few nights when we don't have anybody out here."

Since the area she supervises doesn't have utilities, she says the heat takes a toll on attendance.

But park officials say numbers are actually where they should be this time of year, mainly because lake traffic goes up in the heat.

Fitzwater adds, "They've been having a lot  add that to the fact that a lot of tent campers will just share utility sites to come up with ways to stay cool."

Add that to the fact that the heat doesn't slow down people with RV's, who can run the air while they sleep.

But Turner and his family say as long as they have water to cool off in, they're just fine "roughing it."

"We stay up until 1:00 in the morning and by then its cooled off and you can sleep until it gets hot again at 7:00."

A small window, but enough to beat the heat.
