FARGO, ND. — The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 5-1 at Newman Outdoor Field on Tuesday night.
Ryan Hinson tossed seven strong innings, allowing one earned run on six hits to outduel fellow left-hander Jake Laber. Hinson struck out seven and walked just one.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, the Wingnuts scored twice to take the lead for the remainder of the night. Jorge Delgado led off with a walk and advanced to second when Josh Workman reached first on a bunt single that was dropped by RedHawks' first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke. Peter Barrows laid down a sacrifice bunt along the third base line to give the Wingnuts second and third and one out. Edwin Bellorin followed with a single through the left side of the infield, on an 0-2 pitch, to give Wichita a 2-1 advantage.
Having been handed the lead, Hinson responded by striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth. Beginning with the final two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Hinson retired the next eight batters in a row before a leadoff error charged to Juan Richardson in the bottom of the seventh. Hinson worked around the error when Todd Jennings flied into a double play to shallow right. Jonathan Wyatt grounded out to Hinson on the mound for the final out of the inning.
