Hot summer equals big bills in Kansas

August 09, 2011|By Karl Man | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(NEWTON, Kan.) — The air conditioning is running and the dollars signs are racking up.

"No one likes to see their bills go up each month it hurts everyone's wallets when that happens."

Newton resident Jill Achilles is just one of many who saw their electric bill shoot up over the past month.

"It doubled from 75 to 165 this month...we have been here three years and that is the biggest bill we have had."

Triple digit days across the state are a big reason why that's happening. Achilles was able to make a payment...but there are others who simply cannot afford the bill.

In an effort to help customers, Westar Energy is sending representatives across the state to talk face to face with costumers setting up payment programs.

Monday they were in Topeka, Tuesday in Newton, two days and more than 200 customers later they feel like they are making a difference.

"We are not offering financial assistance we are however finding the resources...making payment plans and working with them", says Westar representative Sherii Farmer.

Westar says it will have stations similar to the one Tuesday in Newton scheduled through the month of September.
