Firefighters are fighting a number of grass fires in Harvey County.

The Harvey County Sherriff’s office says that at about 1:25 PM Tuesday, Harvey County emergency services received calls of numerous fires being reported by the Railroad tracks along Hesston Rd. north of Newton to the McPherson county line. Mutual aid has been requested to fight the fires.

Police say the fire is 12-15 miles, along the railroad. The main threats now are the wind, heat, and the fact that they are in a rural area without a great water supply.

Some residences in the areas have had to be evacuated due to the location of the fires. These fires have threatened homes and other structures. Some outbuildings are engulfed in flames and no homes have been affected although, they are still threatened.

Personnel from Hesston, Newton, Halstead, Burrton, Sedgwick, Walton, White Water, Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol continue to battle these flames.

Hesston Road has been shut down to traffic in order to allow emergency vehicles access to the fires.

It is believed that the flames were most likely caused by hot brakes from a passing train on the tracks. The train has been stopped.

Large fires in Harper and Barber Counties are now out. No structures were damaged and there are no reported injuries.
