(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita police are investigating the possible sexual assault of a 71-year-old patient at the Kansas Masonic Home.

The woman was brought to Wesley Medical Center Sunday for treatment of injuries.  During an examination, a hospital staffer determined the woman had injuries consistent with sexual assault, Sex Crimes Investigator Lt. Randy Reynolds said.

It's unclear when the woman may have received the injuries.  She suffers from dementia and other health problems and has been unable to speak with investigators, Reynolds said.

Police are awaiting the results of a sexual assault kit to determine if a crime has been committed.

The Kansas Masonic Home is also investigating.  Interviews are being conducted with staff and surveillance tapes are being reviewed, according to CEO Matthew Bogner.  Because of patient privacy laws Bogner was unable to release information about the woman's health or injuries.

"We do provide excellent care to our residents and will continue to do so while cooperating with the investigation. We are confident in our healthcare providers and our security team and wish our resident a quick recovery," Bogner told Eyewitness News.
