Original Story, August 25
Police have released the identities of the gunman and the six-year-old girl killed in Thursday morning's shooting in SW Wichita.
Police say Reimy Rivera died after being shot several times by 37-year-old Joel Humberto Corrales Vega. Vega turned the gun on himself.
Rivera's nine-year-old sister is recovering at a Wichita hospital. She is doing better, but remains on a ventilator.
The mother and grandmother, who were also shot, are also improving.
Police say they haven't determined a motive for the shooting, but say Vega and the girls' mother did date for a time.
Vega was living in a motel at the time. Police say they found about an ounce of narcotics, which they believe are meth, in Vega’s vehicle. They don't know if he had any in his system at the time, though. They're waiting for toxicology reports.
The investigation into the shooting continues.
A nine-year-old girl, her mother and grandmother remain in the hospital after being shot in their home Thursday morning. It happened near Pawnee and Maize. A 37-year-old man kicked in the front door around 3:30 a.m. and started shooting.
He killed a 6-year-old girl sleeping in her bed and critically injured her sister. Both girls suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. The 30-year-old mom and 56-year-old grandmother are in serious but stable condition. They were shot in the front room of the home. The gunman, who police say was the mom's ex-boyfriend then shot and killed himself.
Police say they are still trying to figure out why this happened. They believe the gunman and the mother were broken up at the time of the shooting. They say about four hours earlier, the 36-year-old man called and threatened to kill the family. That threat was not reported to police at the time.
All of the victims are Wichita residents, but the gunman was from Mexico. He didn't have a US ID, but he did have a Mexican ID. The man did not have a criminal past. Police have not released any of their names.
Another person, the girls' uncle, was in the house at the time of the shooting. He was not hurt. He was in the basement and ended up calling 911. Police say they don't think the gunman even knew he was in the house.
Police say the father of the children was married to the mother, but was killed in a traffic accident on K-15 back in September of 2005.
