(WICHITA, Kan.) — A small south central Kansas town that formed an emotional attachment with some New York City firefighters after 9/11 is preparing to mark the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
Residents of Anthony raised more than $80,000 to build a Sept. 11 memorial in the town's park. It includes steel from the World Trade Center, a stone from the Pentagon and soil from Shanksville, Pa., where one of the planes crashed after passengers rebelled.
Some of the firefighters who worked at the World Trade Center site after the attacks have returned to Anthony every year to hunt with residents and enjoy the outdoors.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports that two of the firefighters, Lt. James Beltrami and Capt. Rich Kirschner, will be back for a special ceremony on Saturday.
