License plates and registration tags are target for thieves

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita tag offices say it's a perpetual problem, but it tends to be the worst this time of the month.

It's generally after long weekends and at the start of a month that they get the most reports of stolen license plates or registration stickers.

"it's very unfortunate, not only for the people that are suffering the loss, but also because it's an inconvenience for people," said Linda Kizzire, Sedgwick County Treasurer.

There are a few things people can do to try and prevent this from happening. You can buy locking screws, to keep people from taking the whole plate, or take a razor and make cuts in the decal so people can't peel it off.

The state will also be changing how registration stickers are tracked. Right now, the decals are given a generic number that can be looked up if someone runs your registration. In December that number will match license plate numbers.

"Hopefully that will help cut down on some of the problems," adds Kizzire.
