Wichita School Board sets boundary timeline

September 12, 2011|by Denise Hnytka | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — The Wichita School Board met to discuss the process for boundary changes with the new schools.

As part of the 2008 bond issue, new schools are under construction and existing schools are being remodeled or expanded. The boundaries need to be re-drawn to show which students will attend which schools.

What's complicating matters is finances. The district has four million in bond money to pay for the opening of the new schools, but it still needs an additional seven million to fully open the schools as planned. Part of the solution may be modifying the openings of those schools.

The timeline for the decision process was presented at the board meeting.

On September 28 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm will be an introductory community meeting. That will be the first opportunity for the board to get public feedback. A location for that meeting has not been determined.

On October 10, the Board will provide an update on the community feedback it has heard.

Later in the fall, there will be four Superintendent's focus group meetings. In December, the boundary options and maps will be presented to the community in four meetings. On January 23, 2010, a recommendation will bve presented to the board.

A decision is expected to be made on February 13, 2012. That will be right in time for the annual Choices Fair for parents and students.
