The Backstretch Blog: The Same Old Song

September 18, 2011|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

I am the biggest offender. Looking for any hitch in his step. Any slip on the track. Magnifying every little move Jimmie Johnson makes. Glorifying every little stride that other drivers make on the 48 team. We want, heck the sport needs someone to knock off the champ.

But if we take a minute to be completely honest with ourseleves, this year looks exactly the same as it did the year before and the previous two before that. Johnson is the champ and it is going to take a flawless run to knock him off.

Can it be done? I think Denny Hamlin showed us last season it CAN be done. If you dont make any mistakes. But the 11 team made plenty last year, and the 48 was there ready, as always to pounce and get its hands on the Sprint Cup yet again.

So maybe this year Brad Keselowski is just young an naive enough to make a run at JJ. Maybe the crafty mentor Jeff Gordon has one more run to knock off his student and claim number 5 for himself. Maybe Mr. Constancey Matt Kenseth can top 5 the field to a championship. Who knows. What I do know is I'm not going to fall into the trap of over analysing this thing. No matter where you handicap Johnson in this thing. He always finds his way to the top.

"The reason why those guys are five time champions and five time in a row champions is they are good at what they do," said Kyle Busch, who came into the chase as it's top seed this season. "They know what to do and when to do it. They've built that notebook and they built that repertoire that they work well together."

To quote Eddy Murphy in 48 Hours, 'I'm not falling for the banana in the tail pipe.' It may be boring, it might be bad for the sport and it might be predictable. But I am taking Jimmie Johnson to win the championship, until he loses the championship.
