Ft. Riley soldier killed by IED in Afghanistan

(FT. RILEY, Kan.) — A soldier assigned to Fort Riley has died after being attacked with an improvised explosive device in Southern Afghanistan.

21-year-old Specialist Garrett Fant of American Canyon, California was on patrol in the Kandahar Province when an IED detonated on September 26.

Fant was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

He joined the army in March of 2009 and this was his first deployment. 

Fant's awards include the Combat Infantryman's Badge,NATO Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one Campaign Star, and the Army Service Ribbon.
