The Backstretch Blog: Kurt Busch serves up confidence and BBQ

September 29, 2011|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Kurt Busch seemed relaxed as he stood over the girl at Jack Stacks BBQ in Kansas City. The Las Vegas native was in town to learn the secret of KC BBQ and to help promote next week's race at the Kansas Speedway.

"I enjoy jumping out on to the gril," said Busch. "When I get scared is when I'm in the kitchen, when I have to bake something or get all the other side fixin's. The grill, I think that's a man's place."

Busch, who won the first Chase for the Championship in 2004, is currently 9th in points as NASCAR's chase enters it's third week.

"Right now we are only 5 points out of being 5th," Bush told me Wednesday. "It's amazing how tight the points are. And what every position on the track means."

Something that has become more obvious in recent weeks as more and more drivers have spoken out about  the disapearence of NASCAR's gentlemen's agreements on the track. Busch says drivers seem to be mixing it up more for sure.

"There's so much more going on it seems like than the normal races with guys. So it's exciting it keeps you on your toes."

If Busch wants to mix it up with the points leaders, the next few weeks will be an important stretch for him. After Dover, as track that has not been a great one for him, NASCAR starts a five race run that includes Kansas, Charlotte, Talladega and Texas. Four tracks that Busch considers pretty good ones for him and his team.

Looking forward Busch says, "Right now there has been a lot of variables that have lead to the fuel mileage races. I don't see that happening for the next 8 weeks in a row. So it's a matter of which team adapts the best."
