Plastic power

October 12, 2011|By Cindy Klose

(WICHITA, Kan.) — New research says America is wasting potential energy by sending plastics to landfills-the energy equivalent of 36 million tons of coal or 139 million barrels of oil in 2008.

The study by Columbia University researchers looks at technology now available to turn trash into energy.  At the current rate, non-recycled plastics sent to a waste to energy power plant would produce enough electricity for more than five million homes each year. Petroleum based plastics could be converted to fuel cars.
