Kansas State Fair hikes prices for adult tickets

October 13, 2011|By John Boyd & Megan Strader | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(HUTCHINSON, Kan.) — The Kansas State Fair will cost you a little more next year.

According to General Manager Denny Stoecklein, the price of an adult ticket will go from $8 at the gate and $5 in advance to $10 at the gate and $6 in advance.

Kansas State Fair officials made the decision at a meeting Thursday morning.

"Entertainment is getting much more expensive every year, utilities go up and the cost of doing business increases every year," explains Stoecklein.

The 2011 fair drew in nearly 340,000 people. That's less than 2010, but Stoecklein still calls it a good year. He adds that attendance numbers have nothing to do with the need to charge a little more money.

"We're very very proud of the fact that we're self sufficient. We don't depend on tax appropriations to keep us going. We take care of ourselves, from an operation standpoint, and this is just an adjustment that has to be made from time to time so we can keep going that way."

There are no price hikes for children or seniors. The last time retail prices went up was four years ago. The last time advanced ticket prices went up was ten years ago.
