Child abuse trial postponed in North Newton

October 14, 2011|by Kim Hynes | KWCH-12 Eyewitness News

(HARVEY COUNTY, Kan.) — The trial for a North Newton man accused of killing his girlfriend's baby has been postponed.  Chad Carr's trial was supposed to start Monday.  The county attorney tells Eyewitness News the continuance was requested by Carr's attorney. No new date has been set.

Carr is charged with first degree murder for the death of 19-month-old Vincent Hill.  Hill was found not breathing and suffered several broken bones in March of 2010.  The Harvey County Attorney said at the time, that it was the worst case of child abuse he'd ever seen.

Earlier this year, both sides try to work out a settlement in the case.  After three hours of discussion nothing was decided.  That's when the case was set for trail.

Hill's mother, Katheryn Nicole Dale was also charged with child abuse and child endangerment.  She pleaded no contest and was sentenced to more than three years in prison.  In exchange, she's agreed to testify against Carr at trial.
