El Dorado breaks ground on new stadium for Grizzlies

(EL DORAD, Kan.) — One of the nation's top community college football teams will be moving into a new stadium next year.

Dozens attended the groundbreaking on the 6,500-seat stadium for Butler Community College in El Dorado Friday afternoon. The facility will also be used for high school and Little League games.

Construction of the $11 million BG Products Veterans Sports Complex is a joint project of the college, El Dorado public schools and the city. Businessman Bob Lane has been leading the effort to raise $5 million for the project. The rest will come from public funds.

“It shows what a community can do when we work together,” Mayor Tom McKibban said. “None of these three entities could have undertaken this project alone. With that much cooperation, it’s clear there was a need for a new stadium."

If it can be ready in time, the stadium will be unveiled to the public by scheduling fall 2012 homecoming events for both El Dorado High School and Butler on the same weekend, making the grand opening a weekend-long community celebration.

The Butler Grizzlies are ranked fourth in the latest national junior college poll. They're 8-1 after beating Hutchinson 28-10 last week.
