Wichita, Kansas — The explosion in Atchison brings back memories of the DeBruce grain elevator explosion in haysville 13 years ago. It killed seven workers and injured 10 others
"Its like it was yesterday when something like this comes up," said Deb Goin, who's father was killed in DeBruce explosion. "That dust is like dynamite and it can happen at anytime and its devastation"
Federal investigators determined a bad conveyor-belt bearing was to blame for the DeBruce explosion.
After it happened, OSHA expanded its inspections of grain elevators across the country and the industry has increased efforts to control the volatile grain dust. With what happened in Atchison, its clear accidents still happen.
But Deb Goin feels this latest tragedy, and others like it, are all avoidable.
"Bottom line, its senseless and it doesn't ever have to happen," Goin said. "These things are preventable. The one 13 years ago, and the one this weekend, didn't have to happen."
