Why no runaways?

November 02, 2011|By Roger Cornish | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — In the past few weeks, Eyewitness News has received several e-mails and Facebook posts about runaway teenagers from this area.

The senders wonder why the news doesn't generally publicize such cases.

The simple answer is...there are just too many of them.

In an area of this size, there are hundreds of runaways every year.

If we covered them all, the news would end up being simply a runaway hotline show.

So we generally limit stories to those where law enforcement tells us they suspect foul play or are seriously concerned about the child's wellbeing.

Of course, if you're the parent of a runaway child, you may want all the publicity you can get that might get him or her to return home...we understand that.

But we also understand that if our viewers are hearing about dozens of such cases each week, it won't have the impact it would when we are more selective.
