(WICHITA, Kan.) — Andy Veach owns Lawn Sprinkler Services and says he's been blowing out more than a dozen sprinkler systems a day. And thanks to our cold rainy Wednesday, that number could go up.
"The phones have been ringing off the hook all day and tomorrow will probably be worse because it will have actually gotten cold."
Veatch says as soon as temperatures even flirts with the freezing mark, people start to panic.
The good news is your pipes are safe until it the ground freezes, but unless your backflow preventer, the pipes that stick up out of the ground, is wrapped up with a blanket and covered, it could freeze.
"A windy 30 degree night will do it, if it's unwrapped. If it's wrapped up, mid 20's for a day will cause it to freeze."
So while the change in weather may not be what you were hoping for, it's not bad news for everyone.
"It's a little more miserable but it kind of gets people thinking about it again, which is good. For us, the season will drag on until January if we don't get some cold weather to shut it down."
