Wichita Rules!!

November 02, 2011

WICHITA IS AWESOME! Seriously, though…Wichita IS super awesome. We have a lot of talented, local artsits, musicians, etc. and it’s important to support our local culture.
I took some time this past month to go to all the things I want to but never seem to make time for any more: Tallgrass Film Festival, Final Friday, concerts at the Orpheum, etc. What I realized is that sometimes it seems I can get so wrapped up in the world outside that I forget what is right here in our wonderful town. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE LOVE LOVE listening to music of artists from other countries and going to see an occasional box office hit, but when we have so many creative individuals living right here, what’s stopping us from supporting them too?

This weekend there is another incredible Kansas-grown event taking place and that is Knob Fest.  Knob Fest has actually been around since 1998 and according to Mark Foley, Assistant Professor of Double Bass and Electric Bass and Principal Double Bass in the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, “What we are doing is putting together wildly diverse concerts for the type of people who would go to an art opening or do Final Friday.” If you’ve never gone to Final Friday I say “GO ANYWAY!!”  This can be your step in the door to the awesome “Commerce Street Strip” as I like to call it.

Here's the program for 2011 Knob Fest:

Thurs, Nov 3
Improvisations for unaccompanied saxophone, by Ryo Noda, Courtney Long, Sax
Suan Mayo Quartet
CutterJ the Absurdist

Friday Nov 4
U.R.M.: Tat/Beau/Randy
Friends Faculty Jazz Sextet

Saturday Nov 5
River Cow Orchestra - Zen jazz
P.Kellach Waddle --- Unaccompanied Bass

If we don’t support local music, film, art, etc. we will lose it. With the arts losing much funding this past year I say it’s time to step up and make sure we don’t lose our culture.

Happy Listening!
Emily
