(WICHITA, Kan) — Under new management, the Wichita Biddy Basketball program starts its season. Last month the program was in need of equipment, coaches and money to get started. But now they're in much better shape.
For a second year, the Chan family has signed up to play Biddy. They decided to stick with it through a change of management from the Salvation Army to the Champion Church.
"We have friends here," said Keng Chan, a parent of two players. "They are organized with the coaches and friendly."
The last three weeks have been crucial for the program. Key donors have stepped in to help pay for new goals and other equipment. Still the registration deadline been extended for a second time. The hope is to attract more players and coaches.
"Right now we a little short," Chuck Gunter, a coach, said. "Just a few more coaches to help. The kids are still coming in, which is good."
Games are all played in a church gym on North Oliver. It is smaller than the Salvation Army's gym, but Biddy says it is making it work.
"We're still going to be able to accommodate. Last year we have three game days. This year we will have five game days out of the week. It will all work out," said Coach Gunter.
