Kansas ready to open season against Towson

November 10, 2011|By Jenn Bates | KWCH 12 Eyewitness Sports

{LAWRENCE, Kan.} — The Kansas Jayhawks will open the 2011-12 basketball season at home tomorrow night against a team out of Maryland:  Towson.

The Jayhawks are ranked 13th in the preseason AP Top 25 poll.  Point guard Tyshawn Taylor and forward Thomas Robinson are predicted to be the top performers for Kansas this year, although Taylor did not play in KU's final exhibition game.  Both Taylor and Elijah Johnson were suspended for that game because of a violation of team rules.

Robinson is the lone big man in the middle with big-time experience for Bill Self's team.  He did not score a single point in KU's Elite 8 loss to Virginia Commonwealth during last season's NCAA tournament.  He also hyperextended an already injured knee in pre-season practices this year.  However he looked very comfortable on the court in Tuesday night's 101-52 beat down against Fort Hays State.  In that game Robinson recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Towson has also played two exhibition games so far this year.  The Tigers beat Holy Family 51-43 and lost to Virginia State 43-50.  Guard Rashaan Sneed and Khiry Hankins were the leading scorers for the Tigers in their win.  Hankins led with 12 points while Sneed scored 11 before fouling out.

Friday's game starts at 7 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.
