Another Kingman student accused teacher of sexual harassment

November 18, 2011|By Melissa Scheffler | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(KINGMAN, Kan.) — Just this week, a former Kingman High School student filed a lawsuit against the school district.  She claims the district did not do enough to protect her from a teacher's sexual advances.

FactFinder 12 found another former student who also complained about the teacher. We talked to her in August, when we first started looking into allegations against the teacher.  Her story is listed in Jane Doe vs. Unified School District 331. Like the plaintiff in this case, this former student wants to remain anonymous. She was a senior at Kingman High School in 2006.  That's when the lawsuit says she "engaged in unlawful sexual relations" with her teacher.

"It was a brush against my chest," the student said.

This student says the male teacher sent her flirtatious notes.  Then, she says he made inappropriate comments.  Finally, she says she went to police when he touched her.

"It's not the way a senior year should've been,” the student said.

Authorities at the time decided there wasn't enough evidence to file formal charges.  This student says the school district didn't help either.

"It seems like they should have done something to protect not only the people before me, but the people after me,” the student said.

People like Doe, who claims in the lawsuit that the Kingman High teacher acted inappropriately towards her from 2008 to 2010.  It says he asked her questions like, "do you match lingerie."  The suit also says the teacher asked Doe to strip for 500-dollars.

"I would really like to see at least something done to protect the future students,” the student said.

Police also investigated Doe's case.  But, the police chief says there wasn't enough evidence to move forward.  The lawsuit says all the district did was remove Doe from the teacher's classroom.  And in August, we learned the district started offering an online version of this teacher's class for those students who felt uncomfortable.

The school district will not comment on the case.  Eyewitness News does know the teacher at the heart of this matter was put on paid administrative leave Wednesday, just days after the lawsuit was filed.
