FHSU men and women win big over Central Christian

HAYS, Kansas — The Fort Hays State women's basketball team used an 18-2 run to open the game and never looked back as they cruised to a 105-24 win from Central Christian (Kan.) College on Friday night  at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Lady Tigers had 13 different players score and four in double figures as they improved to 4-0 on the season.

Everybody on the FHSU roster played at least nine minutes with nobody getting more than 16 minutes of action. Katelyn Edwards again led the way for the Lady Tigers, scoring 18 points and pulling down five rebounds in just 14 minutes of play. Kimber Wiser had 14 points and a career-high seven rebounds off the bench, while Traci Keyser (13) and Brooke Arp (12) also had double figure scoring efforts. Weiser, Keyser and Keriann Shaw each had seven rebounds for FHSU, who outrebounded Central Christian 66-28.

The Lady Tigers also had 12 blocks on the night, with Kate Lehman leading the way with five while Arp, Jacqueline Bartleson and Janel Durler each had two. Fort Hays State forced 22 turnovers by Central Christian, including 12 steals, with three of them coming from Logan Antenen. Antenen was one of two Tigers who did not score and did not even attempt a shot, but she did have a game-high seven assists.

Karron McKenzie and Matt Simmons each recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds in a 76-52 win over Central Christian. Fort Hays State improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Tyrone Phillips led the way for FHSU with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. He buried three 3-point field goals and was 3-of-4 at the free-throw line. McKenzie finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Simmons had 10 points and 11 rebounds. It was the first double-double for McKenzie as a Tiger, while it was Simmons' second and first of this season.

The Tigers led by 16 at halftime and held Central Christian at bay in the second half. FHSU shot 48.4 percent from the field and held Central Christian to 37.5 percent shooting. The Tigers forced 23 turnovers out of Central Christian, 14 on steals. Simmons had a team-high four steals, four blocked shots, and five assists to go with his double-double.
