(PULLMAN, Washington) — Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is the new football coach at Washington State. The school said Wednesday that Leach had agreed in principle to a five-year contract. He will be introduced next Tuesday at a news conference in Pullman.

Terms of the contract were not immediately available.

The 50-year-old Leach posted an 84-43 record at Texas Tech, leading the Red Raiders to 10 bowl appearances in 10 seasons. He was fired in 2009 amid allegations he mistreated a player with a
concussion.

He replaces Paul Wulff, who was fired after four losing seasons.

"First off I would like to express my appreciation to Paul Wulff for all his efforts and dedication to Washington State and wish him the best in the future," said Leach in a statement. "It's an honor to have the opportunity to work with (Athletics Director) Bill Moos, who is a legend in this business. To have the opportunity as a coach to work with someone like that is an experience few head coaches get.

Leach had been mentioned as a leading candidate for the head coaching job at the University of Kansas. The school fired Turner Gill on Sunday after a two losing seasons.

Leach is friends with KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger. Zenger told the Kansas City Star on Wednesday that he has 6-10 candidates in mind and is leaving Lawrence to conduct his search.

"When I find the right guy, I will stop," Zenger said.
