Storm Team 12: Winter storm, soaking rain

Heavy Snow NW Kansas

December 03, 2011|By Meteorologist Dean Jones | Storm Team 12

A strong winter storm will move across the Plains today bringing the state a mix of rain, light freezing rain and snow.

Rain is expected across central and eastern Kansas today. Rain changing to some freezing drizzle/light freezing rain will also be possible over parts of western and northern Kansas before transitioning to light snow Saturday evening.  Snow will be moderate to heavy at times across portions of western and northwestern Kansas. It will be accompanied by gusty, north winds so some blowing and drifting is possible.  Meanwhile, rain will continue over central and eastern Kansas during the day but could briefly change to light snow Saturday night before ending.

Snowfall totals of 4-8" are expected in western Kansas, including Hill City, Oakley and Syracuse.  Around 4" is forecast for Goodland, with 1-3" forecast in Garden City, Hays and Russell.  Only a trace to 1" is forecast for Dodge City and Salina. Accumulating snow is not expected at this time for Hutch or Wichita.

Sunday look for decreasing clouds but a chilly afternoon.
