(WICHITA, Kan.) — About 20 volunteers gathered at McConnell Air Force Base at 7 a.m. Friday to package homemade cookies as gifts for young servicemen and women.

Staff Sargent Julius King, who helped organize the event, said the Commander, the Base Command Chief and others will help distribute cookies to service members later today. King says a special delivery of cookies will be made on Christmas Eve for those who work as part of 24 hour operations.

“First and foremost, I hope it does bring them some cheer,” says King. “I hope it lets them know this is a family and everybody does care about them.  Even though they’re away from home and their immediate family, they have the McConnell Air Force Base family.”

Charlotte Rupp, who helped box cookies this morning, said they put out the call for 1600 cookies to a number of organizations and were happily overwhelmed to receive more than 5000.

It’s for the airmen, the single airmen,” says Rupp. “We want them to have a sense of home.”

Rupp says she hopes these cookies help comfort service members who may be experiencing their first Christmas away from home.
