Kansas teachers honored for "Educating Excellence"

December 13, 2011|By Robert Marin | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Two south-central Kansas teachers get a surprise honor Tuesday with an Educating Excellence award.

Wichita Northeast Magnet math teacher Susan Credille and Skyline High School science teacher Chuck Young both received the honor. The award is sponsored by the University of Kansas School of Engineering and recognizes outstanding teachers in high school science, technology, engineering and math.

Credille's co-workers nominated her and said she is a great resource for both students and other teachers. Credille says she was truly surprised and thrilled by the award.

"it's just an honor to have them do this for me," said Credille." I don't do it for money or anything, I do it for the kids to make sure they are successful in school".

Young was honored for going above and beyond his duties in the classroom. Officials with the awards say current and former students told stories about times he stayed after class and offered counsel, including health advice and career counseling.

The selection committee hands out awards each month throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. Winning teachers receive $1,500. Credille says she already knows what she'll use the money for, new calculators for her classroom.
