(McPHERSON, Kan.) — Aware and alert. That's the tone the McPherson Police Department has set. "Don’t hesitate to call us if you think you have been a victim or you think you are missing something."

Captain Michael Terry has kept busy the last couple of weeks sifting through case after case of burglaries that have been linked to three teenagers.

The teens targeted cars, sheds and farmhouses...taking tools, gas cans and even an all-terrain vehicle.

"These people do not have the money to buy things that they feel that they deserve, and they see these things that the people have and take them”, added Capt. Terry.

The police in McPherson say it's typical for the crime rate to go up this time of year.

They say for whatever reason people get comfortable with their security during the winter months and that is when they get caught off guard.

Police gave out two key tips for staying secure during the holidays. Locking you doors on your car or house will stop thieves 80 to 90 percent of the time according to law enforcement.

Secondly, police say to take pictures of any specific valuables...if they are stolen it makes it much easier to recover the items.

McPherson police say they're changing the way they patrol rural areas... including regular stops at sheds and smaller areas.
