Homeless murder victim's family gives back

January 02, 2012|By Brian Heap | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WILMOT, Kan.) — Arlene Hauschulz stacks bags of brand new socks and prepares to deliver them to the homeless.

She knows a little about what they're going through.  Her son Marshall Hauschulz had a drinking problem and was living on the streets, while working to turn his life around.

But before that could happen, he was beaten to death near the bank of the Arkansas River.  His body was found December 16th, 2011 and police have yet to solve the murder.

"I know Marshall would do everything he could to help other people.  He always did.  So we're just trying to carry it on," Arlene says.

"Instead of going through an expensive funeral and all of that, we decided this would be better."

So the Hauschulz family, along with Marshall's girlfriend, Jo Montgomery, have taken money from friends and co-workers and used it to buy clothing items for the homeless.  A shipment of about 650 pairs of socks is part of the third installment of donations since Marshall was killed.

"I'm hoping some good can come out of this death and I hope they get the people that brutally beat him to death," says Arlene Hauschulz.

She also hopes the story of what happened to her son can open some eyes and change the public's attitude toward the homeless.
