Man burned in accident at Wichita recycling plant

January 24, 2012|by Kim Hynes | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — An accident at a Wichita recycling facility causes third degree burns to an employee.  The accident happened late Tuesday morning at the Glickman Metal Recycling center on east 25th street.

Fire investigators say an employee was using a cutting torch to disassemble the big wheel on an asphalt roller.  When pressure was released from the roller, it caused a flash fire.  The rollers are normally filled with water but in freezing conditions they are filled with another type of liquid.  Fire investigators believe the liquid was flammable.

The accident caused third degree burns over 28% of the employee's body.  The accident is under investigation.
