Less sodium, more vegetables for school lunches

(WICHITA, Kan.) — School lunches are about to get healthier nationwide...and here in Wichita.

First Lady Michelle Obama announced that meals, including pizza, will have less sodium, more whole grains and more fruits and vegetables as sides.

The new rules are the first major nutritional overhaul of school meals in 15 years.  The new guidelines would apply to lunches subsidized by the federal government.

The guidelines were first announced last year, and were finalized before being released Wednesday. Along with the sodium requirements, fresh fruits and vegetables need to be served daily.

Officials with USD 259 say the new requirements will increase costs by six to fourteen cents a plate. They say the budget for school lunches is paid for by federal dollars.
