WICHITA, Kan. — Chris Chappell recorded a hat trick and Matt Summers notched three points as Wichita (27-12-2) smothered Quad City (23-17-1) Sunday night, winning 5-1 in front of 9,401 fans at INTRUST Bank Arena. Wichita improves to 6-0-2 all-time against Quad City and 3-0-0 at home.

Chris Chappell (4) gave Wichita the early lead as he came down the wall, cut across the goal line and followed up his own rebound at 13:06. Four minutes later, Matt Summers (13) stole it from the Mallard defender and sniped a wrist shot just under the cross bar to give Wichita a 2-0 lead.

Wichita kept its foot on the gas pedal in the second as R.G. Flath (7) fired one from the face-off dot, beating Mallard goalie David McKee to make it 3-0. After Kevin Seibel was sent to the penalty box for boarding, Chris Chappell (5) added to the Thunder lead for his second goal of the game late in the period. He stole the puck at the Thunder line and went coast-to-coast beating McKee on a two-on-one. It was the seventh shorthanded goal scored by the Thunder this season and made it 4-0.

The Thunder added another tally in the third period on the power play. Off a face-off, Summers won the draw back to Martens who took a shot that was tipped in by Chappell (6) for his third of the night. Chappell scored on the power play, shorthanded and also a regular strength goal in the contest. The Mallards would stop the shutout bid from Bryan Hogan with a power play goal with four minutes left. Hogan, who was acquired by Wichita earlier in the week in a trade with Dayton, rebounded nicely as he let in nine goals on January 14th against Quad City in a Gems uniform.

Wichita claimed six out of a possible eight points during the week and improved its home record to a CHL-best 18-4-0. Against the Turner Conference, Wichita is an impressive 11-3-2 this season.

Wichita hits the road for the next three games before returning home Friday, February 10th against Tulsa.
