February 04, 2012|By Chris Durden | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(COLBY, Kan.) — After being shut down at Goodland, I-70 is back open but it is still snow packed and icy.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for northwest Kansas through Saturday evening.

  • Snowfall totals of 8-12 inches are possible north of I-70 from Colby and Hill City to Smith Center. Snowfall amounts drop off rapidly farther to the southeast
  • Hays should see around 3-4 inches of snow while Salina and Garden City will be from a trace to 1 inch
  • Hutchinson and Wichita won't see any accumulating snow

The storm should be coming to an end in Kansas by Sunday morning. Until then, drivers in northwest Kansas are urged to use caution.

"We are ready for the storm," said Joe Finley, KDOT Northwest District Maintenance Engineer.  "We have prepared our trucks and road supplies and road crews are scheduled for around the clock.  Due to the predicted rain first, crews will not be pre-treating roads."

Air travel is also being impacted. Denver International Airport cancelled more than 600 flights Friday, including some to and from Wichita. Travelers are urged to contact the status of their flight before heading to the airport.
