K-State prepares for Texas Tech

February 07, 2012|by Bruce Haertl | KWCH 12 Eyewitness Sports

(WICHITA, Kan.) — If there’s an easy touch in the Big 12 it has to be Texas Tech playing on the road.  The Red Raiders have lost ten straight and  are pretty bad in head coach Billy Gillespie’s first year.  None of which should be too comforting forK-State as they host the Raiders tonight.  Frank Martin knows that his club isn’t good enough to let up against anyone, in fact—gaining consistency is job one for the Top Cat.

The Cat’s have won five of the last six meetings between the two, including a 22-point blowout in Lubbock two weeks ago.  The Wildcats are coming off a nice win over Texas A&M where Will Spradling broke out of a nine game slump.  The Sophomore  had been shooting just over 24 percent through nine conference games, before erupting for a career high 19 points against the Aggies.   On the other hand, Rodney McGruder, the club’s leading scorer, was help under double digits for the first time in 12 games.  Kansas State continues to turn the ball over too much, 15.8 times in conference play which translates to over 18 points a game against them.  Martin has tightened up his defense  allowing not even 59 points over the last five conference games, as opposed to 73 pts./gm through the first five.

Kansas State is looking to move above .500 in the Big 12 with a win Tuesday night and would further separate them from the Big 12’s lower division.  The Cat’s need to feast now, who knows how slim the pickings will be over the next two and a half weeks.  Consider the schedule starting Saturday at Texas, followed by a Big Monday visit from KU. Five days later they go to Baylor , then head straight to Missou before finishing the gauntlet at home against Iowa State. Daunting stuff.
