What are Silver Alerts?

February 08, 2012|By Jennifer Searle | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Silver Alerts differ from Amber Alerts that are issued when a child is missing.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is the only agency that can issue an Amber Alert.  Local law enforcement issue Silver Alerts.

Silver Alerts are issued when someone with dementia disappears or when someone over 65 disappears who has medical or mental issues that could diminish their ability to survive.

Kansas has had the Silver Alert program since 2009.  17 Silver Alerts have been issued since it's been in place.  Two, including Mr. Fairchild, are still missing.  14 of the Silver Alerts have ended with the individual being found alive.  One person was found dead.
